Driver's license and identity verification

What we collect at booking, why we verify, what data is kept, and what to do if verification fails.

You'll need a valid driver's license and a quick ID verification step at booking. Takes about a minute. We do this because self-service rentals are a target for fraud, and verifying identity protects both us and you.

Why we verify

There's no counter where we can check your license, and no human handing over the keys. The ID check at booking is what stops someone from booking a trailer under a stolen identity or using someone else's payment method. It also confirms that the person being charged is the person who'll be towing the trailer β€” which matters for insurance, liability, and our ability to recover the trailer if something goes wrong.

What we collect

Three things happen during ID verification:

  1. Photo of your driver's license (front and back). You can take it with your phone.

  2. A selfie β€” taken right then, so we can match your face to your license photo.

  3. A name match between your license and the payment method you're booking with.

This happens through a secure ID verification provider. It usually takes under a minute.

Minimum age

You must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license.

Out-of-state and international licenses

Out-of-state US licenses: accepted with no extra steps. Just upload it like any other.

International licenses: message us before booking. Most are workable, but the verification flow is designed for US licenses and we want to walk you through it so the booking doesn't fail at checkout.

What can cause verification to fail

  • License photo is blurry or doesn't capture the whole card

  • License is expired

  • Name on the license doesn't match the name on the payment method

  • Face in the selfie doesn't sufficiently match the license photo

  • License is from a country the verification provider doesn't currently support

If verification fails at booking, you'll see an error message. Try again with better lighting and a clearer license photo first. If it keeps failing, message us through chat and we'll help work through it β€” sometimes a small data correction is enough; sometimes we need to verify identity manually before approving the booking.

What we do with your data

Your license and selfie are handled by our secure ID verification provider. We keep a record that verification succeeded along with basic details (name, date of birth for age verification). Data handling details are in our Privacy Policy.
