Here's the full return flow at a glance, then detail on each step below:

Sweep out the trailer bed — debris-free avoids the $100 cleaning fee.
Unhitch.
Retrieve the coupler lock from the toolbox and engage it on the trailer hitch.
Lock the toolbox.

In the booking app, tap Return to start the return flow.
Take the 6 return photos the app asks for.
Answer the 6 return questions.
Submit to mark the return complete.
The return mirrors the pickup. Everything you took out of the keybox goes back in. Everything you unlocked gets re-locked. The four physical security steps (engage coupler lock, lock toolbox, return keys, close keybox) are what hand the trailer back to us — until they're done, you're still responsible for it.
Before return
Check your booking app for:
Your return location (usually the same as pickup, but the app shows the current spot)
Your return time
Plan to arrive with time for the sweep-out and photos — figure on 10-15 minutes total.
Sweep out the trailer
Before you unhitch, sweep the bed clear of debris. A debris-free trailer avoids the $100 flat cleaning fee. Heavier soiling (paint, concrete, biological waste, anything requiring professional cleaning) can lead to higher charges.
Quick definitions, so you're not guessing:
Doesn't count as dirty: a little dirt or dust from normal hauling
Counts as dirty: yard waste, mulch, gravel, trash, anything the next renter would have to clean before using
If you're unsure, take a photo of the swept bed before final lockup — we can confirm.
Unhitch
Park the trailer in the spot the booking app shows for return. Then:
Crank the jack stand down until it firmly supports the trailer tongue.
Unlock the coupler from your ball.
Lift the coupler clear of the ball.
Unplug the 7-pin electrical connector.
Unhook the safety chains.
Pull your tow vehicle forward, clear of the trailer.
Engage the coupler lock on the hitch
This is the critical step that hands the trailer back to us.
Open the toolbox with the toolbox key.
Retrieve the coupler lock (you stowed it there at pickup).
Engage the coupler lock on the trailer's hitch coupler.
Confirm the lock is fully engaged — give it a firm tug to make sure.
The trailer must not be left at the return location without the coupler lock engaged. This is contractually required and is the condition of our theft coverage between rentals.
Lock the toolbox
The toolbox should now be empty of the coupler lock (it's back on the hitch). Close the toolbox and re-lock it with the toolbox key. Any trailer-specific equipment that lives in the toolbox between rentals stays inside.
Return both keys to the keybox
Place both keys (coupler lock key + toolbox key) back inside the keybox.
Close the keybox — it locks automatically when closed.
Both keys staying inside the keybox between rentals is what protects them from being lost — and how the next renter accesses the trailer with their code.
Open the booking app to take the 6 return photos
In the booking app, tap Return to start the return flow. The app prompts you for 6 photos: the four corners of the trailer, the bed interior, and a closeup of the coupler locked on the hitch. Take them carefully — clear, well-lit, from the angles the app asks for.
The coupler-locked photo is your evidence that you completed the security step — useful in the unlikely event of a dispute.
Answer the 6 return questions
After the photos, the app asks six quick yes/no questions to confirm you completed each step of the return: location, coupler lock, keys returned, condition, cleanliness, and your acknowledgment that any damage or cleaning charges process to the card on file.
Submit to mark the return complete
Once the photos and questions are submitted, the booking app marks the return complete. Your rental is closed. Final charges (if any) process within a day or two.
What if I'm running late?
Message us in chat as soon as you know. If the trailer's booked right after you, late returns can lead to late fees and possible refund obligations to the next renter — best to avoid by messaging early.
What if something's not working at return?
Use the chat. Examples:
The booking app won't accept your photos
The smart keybox won't accept the keys
You can't engage the coupler lock for any reason
You damaged the trailer during the rental (always disclose; don't try to hide)
We respond in chat during business hours (8am–8pm CT). For urgent issues outside hours, leave a message — we'll pick it up first thing.
