Trailer specifications: PJ Trailers DT1

Full specs for our 14-foot dump trailer — dimensions, GVWR, payload, features, and what it takes to tow.

Our trailer is a 2026 PJ Trailers DT1 14-foot telescopic dump trailer — a tandem-axle workhorse rated for serious hauling.

Dimensions

  • Length: 14 feet

  • Width (outside): about 7 feet (83 inches)

  • Bed inside width: 4 feet (48 inches)

  • Side height: 4 feet

  • Dump angle: 45° at full extension

Capacity

  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): 15,400 lbs

  • Empty weight: about 4,000 lbs

  • Payload capacity: about 11,200 lbs (~5.5 tons)

  • Volume capacity: about 14 cubic yards

For dense loads (gravel, dirt, concrete), you'll hit the weight limit at about 3-4 cubic yards. For lighter loads (mulch, brush, debris), you'll fill the bed before you hit the weight limit. The loading guide has material-by-material weights.

Standard features

  • 5-stage front-mount telescopic hydraulic cylinder — fast 45° dump for aggregates

  • 2-way rear gate system — barn doors and a spreader gate (lets material flow out a controlled gap while you drive, useful for spreading mulch or gravel)

  • 6'6" slide-in channel ramps — stored under the bed; for loading equipment (mowers, ATVs, small machinery)

  • Heavy-duty locking front toolbox — for tools, the coupler lock during transit, and any equipment included with the rental

  • Protective tarp shroud with included tarp — for securing loose loads

  • (4) interior D-rings for tie-downs

  • Top rail stake pockets for additional securement options

  • Rear support stands for stability during loading/unloading

Tow vehicle requirements

To tow this trailer safely and legally, your vehicle needs:

  • Hitch ball: 2-5/16" diameter, rated 15,000+ lbs

  • Receiver: rated for the trailer's loaded weight (look for a Class IV or Class V receiver)

  • Electrical connector: 7-pin round

  • Brake controller: required (the trailer has electric brakes on both axles)

  • Manufacturer tow rating: at least 15,000 lbs for full payloads; lighter ratings OK for partial loads, but verify against your specific tow capacity

  • Typical vehicle: half-ton pickup is workable for lighter loads; 3/4-ton or 1-ton recommended for full payloads

For the detailed equipment requirements and how to verify each, see hitch, connector, and brake controller requirements.

Axles, tires, and brakes

  • Axles: tandem 7,000 lb each (14,000 lb combined)

  • Brakes: electric, on all 4 wheels, self-adjusting

  • Tires: Transeagle ST 235/80R16 16-ply Load Range H (upgraded from the standard 10-ply for additional load margin)

  • Wheels: 8-bolt heavy-duty (upgraded from the standard 6-bolt)

The tires and wheels are upgraded from PJ's standard build to give about 25% safety margin over the trailer's GVWR — significant headroom on heavy loads.

Security

Every trailer is equipped with:

  • GPS tracking (LTE-M, motion-activated, geofence-capable) — for security, recovery, and monitoring compliance with the geographic restrictions in the Rental Agreement

  • Hardened coupler lock (Proven Industries 2517-D1) — primary theft deterrent

  • Smart keybox with time-boxed PIN codes generated for each renter

These aren't optional or removable. The coupler lock is required to stay engaged when the trailer is parked or unattended.
